Two minuses make a plus!
I don't recall too much of my school maths, but this mathematical law is stil firmly imprinted on the old grey matter:
Two minuses make a plus.

I had never thought about making any spiritual application of this until recently when I was once again musing over the miracle of what has happened in my own life regarding my weight issues.  Let me explain...

All my life I had a weakness regarding food.... so easily tempted to overeat simply because I loved food; being swayed in my judgements by spurious thinking such as getting my money's worth or not wanting to miss out on something and using food for reward or compensation. This was one of the minuses and it made my relationship with food a constant battle.

The second minus was a crisis circumstance in my life back in 2003 which floored me emotionally and sent me to the larder to help cope with the pain. The natural outcome of this was double trouble ( 1 minus + 1 minus = 2 minuses) and a weight gain of 20 pounds over two months!

But then I cried out to the Lord and, recognising my own powerlessness, laid down both of these minuses at His feet. I didn't realise it at the time but I was opening the door for a mathematical miracle.  When we bring God into the equation He changes our minuses into a plus. When we repent and humble ourselves before the Lord we unlock heaven so that grace can be poured into our lives, but God doesn't just add His blessings, He multiplies them!  The outcome?  Two minuses make a plus!

I guess that what I am saying, in a querky kind of way, is that 'all things work together for good to those who love God and are called according to His purposes.' (Romans 8:28)   Since you are visiting this website you probably already have at least one minus in your life - your struggle against the lure of food - and it may be that your present circumstance seems to be making it harder than ever to resist and that you, too, are piling on the pounds. The voice of fleshly reasoning would seem to suggest that you hold off attending to the weight until your circumstances are more favourable. 'Once I'm through this difficulty or crisis I'll focus on my weight,' is what you think, but God says, 'Today if you hear my voice, harden not your heart.... 'Now is the accepted time; now is the day of salvation.'

So if life seems to be giving you a raw deal at the moment, don't despair.  Satan means it for evil, but God means it for your good.  Let Him take your minuses and pour out His transforming grace upon your life.  God often uses a crisis in which to reveal Himself.  'He is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that you can ask or think, according to the working of His mighty power.' Ephesins 3:20.  Don't you forget it!
