Standing your ground
"God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early" (Ps. 46:2, 3, 5)

The track record of most of us who have tried to lose weight is that we start off with the best of intentions but eventually we succumb to our weakness and then, having blown it, simply decide that it isn’t worth the effort.  We are easily moved.

So here we read, "she shall not be moved"--what an inspiring declaration! Can it be possible that we, who have failed so miserably in the past, can arrive at a place where nothing moves us?  Yes, it most certainly is!  How? Because God is with us and he is our help and salvation.

This doesn’t mean that we won’t fall of the bike from time to time, for we will, but it does mean that we can come to a place where nothing can move us from our ‘steadfast, avowed intent’ (quoting from the old hymn: To be a pilgrim)

When the apostle Paul was on his way to Jerusalem where he foresaw that "bonds and afflictions" awaited him, he also could say triumphantly, "But none of these things move me." Everything in Paul's life and experience that could be shaken had been shaken, so that he no longer counted his life, or any of life's possessions, dear to him.  He was fully submitted to the will of God so the circumstances of life, both little and great, could not disturb his inner peace nor distract him from his call.

Just as there is complete peace in the centre of a storm, so too there is an inner calm for us when we remain still in God’s hands, at the centre of his will.  In Jeremiah we read about the potter and the clay.  The meaning is clear: we are to be like clay in God’s hand so that he can mould our lives according to his will.  We cannot change ourselves, not even to lose weight and maintain it, but as we remain still, seated, as it were, at the centre of the potter’s wheel, he is able to fashion us according to his master plan.  We shall not be moved!

If God has called you into this life of submitting your eating behaviour to his Lordship, he is going to make you an overcomer.  You have planted your feet on the Rock, the Lord Jesus Christ, and he is your firm foundation; he is your stability.

Another picture which springs to mind is that of a tree planted by rivers of living water, with strong roots reaching deep into the soil of God’s Word. So let the winds come against you – the temptations, the criticism, the painful memories, the enemy’s lies. Will you be shaken? Yes, probably you will, but you will not be moved.  This is God’s promise.  Cling to it!
