Being positive
First of all, if you are a regular reader of the Thought for the Week, let me apologise for not having written for a month. The reason is two-fold.  Firstly we have re-located to the East Midlands so there has been all the upheaval of moving house, and secondly, with the move, I have only just got internet connection.  Anyway, it is now business as usual and I hope to write regularly from now on.

Naturally speaking there is a lot to be negative about at the moment. There is the current uncertainty of living in this turbulent world which could cause many of us to comfort eat. And then for dieters January always brings mixed emotions: depression on the one hand because the festive season has caused weight gain yet again, but on the other hand maybe there is also a glimmer of hope as resolve to shed the unwanted pounds is generally high at this time.

However, whether our concerns are global, personal or both God wants us to remain positive. A short while ago a lady shared with me how she was using a number of faith affirmations to help bolster her faith and keep her positive.  With her permission I want to share a few of these with you now…

“Today I know that my body is different from last week.

Today I know that my choices of food will be thoughtful, prayerful and measured

I will not beat myself up when I get it wrong

If I do make wrong choices God is there for me.”

This lady then went on to quote from a well-loved old hymn, ‘Guide me, O Thou great Redeemer’ where the chorus says: "Bread of Heaven feed me till I want no more" What a wonderful prayer! It could be paraphrased: ‘Feed me, until I am satisfied’.  Of course in context this is a purely spiritual thought, but as we focus on Jesus, the Living Bread, He will not only satisfy us spiritually but also take charge of our relationship with food helping us to eat according to our body’s needs and thoroughly satisfying us in the process.

My correspondent ended with these words of Scripture: "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."  Amen to that!  As you seek to have a Spirit-controlled appetite remember it isn’t sticking to rules, regulations and food mantras that are going to bring you permanent victory, but God’s grace poured into your life as you yield to His control.

Be bold, be strong, for the Lord your God is with you!  Walk in faith and you will be walking in victory.  Hallelujah!
